June 16, 2009 - EU Increases Pressure on US Over Internet Gambling
The European Union called the United States’ stance on online gambling a ‘violation of international trade regulations’, in a new report that is hoped will bring changes to the US gambling climate once and for all.
On Wednesday this week, the European Union said that it would not hesitate to seek compensation from the World Trade Organization for damages caused by the United States’ policy that prefers local companies and blatantly discriminates against offshore gambling operators.
Jeffrey Sandman, speaking for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative, said:
“The European Commission report provides yet another reason why the administration and Congress should support pending legislation to regulate Internet gambling, which would resolve the trade agreement violation and better protect consumers.”
However, the European Union also allowed for an element of optimism by saying that it was sure that the issues between the two entities could be ironed out. The European Union believes that the initiative by Rep. Barney Frank to legalize and regulate the online gambling industry in the United States once and for all could be the catalyst for change in the relationship between the US and the EU over the current thorny online gambling issue.
Frank’s bill is considered one of the best pieces of potential legislation to be introduced as yet. Not only will it allow US players to gamble in a safe and secure gaming environment, but will also protect against money laundering, underage gambling and fraud.
