Europe Divided on Internet Gambling

September 17, 2011 - Europe Divided on Internet Gambling

A special European Parliament committee vote on internet gambling has been scheduled by the European Parliament for September 19th which should decide on the fate of online gambling regulation on the continent.

European countries currently have different opinions as to the best way to regulate internet gambling with some being of the opinion that the European Parliament should regulate online gambling while others feel that individual states should be given the final say.

Although several MEPs feel that individual states should be the judge as to if and how to regulate online gambling in their own countries, others are of the opinion that a standard set of rules should be defined by the European Union which should be adopted by and applied in all the states that form part of the European Union.

At present online gambling laws is the technical responsibility of each state but the fact that online gambling is a pastime without any borders defines it as an international gambling activity. Member states who, therefore, wish to regulate their own industries will no doubt find it physically impossible to do so owing to the nature of online casinos and internet gambling.

Due to the fact that so many different laws govern the online gambling industry on one continent, the European Union is of the opinion that standardization needs to take place.

A green paper was issued by Liberal MEP from Germany, Jurgen Creutzmann earlier this year raising the question of whether the European Parliament should be the venue to determine the rules of it is should be left up to individual states with the emphasis of the green paper being for more cooperation between the states.
