April 17, 2009 - Harrahs Online To Be Headed By Ex Partygaming Boss
During the holiday period The Sunday Times reported that following the appointment of ex-PartyGaming group CEO Mitch Garber as head of the Internet operations and World Series of Poker division at the giant land casino company, Harrah’s Entertainment, the gaming giant is branching out into a newly-created entity and it is presumed that Harrah’s will be making acquisitions in the online gaming sector. Harrah’s has been demonstrating a big interest in supporting legalized and regulated online gambling in the United States.
Gary Loveman, Harrah’s Entertaiment CEO, is confident that online poker will be legalized especially in view of Barney Frank, House Financial Services Committee chairman preparing to launch his attack on the UIGEA later this month.
In September 2001, another U.S giant, MGM Mirage, also set up an online casino gambling operation which unfortunately closed down in June 2003 due to the legal situation in the US constraining its activities. However, in the process, they established the technology that could be used to protect minors and lessen the chances of money laundering or fraud attacks
Terri Lanni, who was Chairman and Ceo of MGM Mirage at the time said “We were successful in demonstrating a working model that provided the proper checks for jurisdictional control, age verification and the necessary security and responsible gaming measures required to function in a regulated market”.
With millions of U.S. citizens participating in unregulated online gaming Lanni believed that a realistic policy would be to regulate the activity as MGM Mirage Online had clearly proved that the regulatory model works.
