Increase in College Online Gambling After Gambling Age Lowered

March 29, 2009 - Increase in College Online Gambling After Gambling Age Lowered

The legal gambling age will soon be lowered from twenty one to eighteen if two new Bills which have been passed in the Senate Regulated Industries Committee in Florida, is signed into law.

There is already a vast increase in the number of online gamblers all over the United States covering all age groups. The growth in the number of online gamblers seems to be more prevalent amongst college students. The new law will also see a growth spreading to the land based casinos in Florida.

In terms of the current law, an eighteen year old may not play slots, blackjack, or any other Class 111 casino games but is, however, allowed to play poker, the lottery as well as gamble at horse tracks. This is one of the reasons why the sponsor of the Bill, Dennis Jones feels the need for the law to be uniform all the way across.

Pat Fowler, Executive Director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling is not at all happy about the proposed law as she feels that eighteen to twenty year olds belong to one of the highest risk gambling groups and do not understand how to manage their finances or to budget and has pointed this fact out to the Tallahassee Bureau.

Herbert Clancey did not agree with Pat Fowler's opinion at all as he felt that there are thousands of adults gambling in the casinos every day and night who do not have the faintest idea how to balance their books whereas college students, who have only themselves to support, are in a better financial position to gamble.
