June 8, 2009 - Minnesota Drops Action To Block Gambling Sites
After lots of opposition from various sources, the US state of Minnesota has dropped its action whereby they tried to force internet service providers, including Verizon, Comcast and AT & T not to allow state residents’ to have access to a “blacklist” of 200 gambling websites.
EGRmagazine.com has reported that bodies which included America’s Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (IMEGA) lobby group opposed the action by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and last month wrote to the eleven Internet Service Providers advising them to ignore the order. They also asked Minnesota’s biggest city, the District Court of Minneapolis, to stop the Minnesota Department of Public Safety from enforcing the order which they thought was unjust.
Pat Garafolo, representative of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety issued an announcement stating that they had dropped the action to block state residents’ access after reconsidering the legal position. He also announced that no further action would be taken.
Garafolo also stated that it was a great day for internet freedom and that it was quite prepared to withdraw its bill and sponsor a discussion in order to attempt to establish a way of regulating and licensing the online gaming industry instead.
America’s Poker Players Alliance (PPA) also opposed the bill and Mathew Werden, PPA Minnesota State Director said that Minnesota poker players had made their voices heard, that the state had listened and put a stop to its unwarranted and sudden attempt to put a stop to the rights of Minnesota poker players. Minnesota poker players are very pleased with the result.
