March 4, 2009 - NFL To Attack Online Gambling
The National Football League has hired a permanent lobbyist , based in Washington, in an attempt to increase its fight against online gambling by putting pressure on U.S. Lawmakers on its behalf.
Jeff Miller, who was formerly a senior aide to Wisconsin Democrat Senator Herb Kohl, has been hired by the National Football League to work at the league's new Washington office as an in-house lobbyist. A political action committee has also been set up by the National Football League in order to make federal campaign contributions in an attempt to increase its influence in the capital.
The NFL is endeavoring to protect the present ban on Internet gambling under the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) which was responsible for banning Internet gambling by making the transfer of funds from a financial institution to Internet gambling sites illegal. This issue will take top priority when Miller commences his job.
News Agencies have quoted Jeff Miller as saying that "We want to maintain the integrity of the game, and gambling threatens that".
Betting on the National Football League is presently just as popular as the actual games themselves in the US with Nevada bookmakers alone taking in eighty one point five million dollars in bets on Super Bowl XL111 in January of this year. However, it would appear that as a result of the present financial crisis, betting on the NFL has dropped slightly compared to previous years.
