Online Gambling Ban To Be Lifted In Switzerland

April 27, 2009 - Online Gambling Ban To Be Lifted In Switzerland

Switzerland has for years been one of the countries where online gambling has been illegal. However, the country has at long last announced its intention to reverse their decision to outlaw online gambling and to finally allow online gambling in this snowy wonderland.

Switzerland is following France and Denmark’s decision to open its boarders to international online gambling thus making online poker available to all players.

Once online gambling is legalized companies wishing to benefit will need to apply for a limited number of licenses. All applications will be thoroughly scrutinized before it is decided whether the license will be granted or denied. All licenses granted will be taxed.

All gambling will not be automatically legalized in Switzerland and quite a few sections will not be available, for example, gambling over the telephone and gambling via television will still be illegal.

Although Switzerland is a small country in comparison to France and Denmark with fewer people being as enthusiastic about gambling the Swiss Government still estimates that it can raise twenty two million dollars a year following the legislation. The result of having less enthusiastic gamblers as well as the size of the country will see the Swiss raising much less through the legislation than their Scandinavian counterparts.

It has been reported that online lotteries as well as internet sports betting has already been legalized in Switzerland which has enabled the Swiss government to gain some experience in this section.

It will probably take approximately three years before legislation is implemented.
