Online Gambling Outlawed By Cambodian Government

March 14, 2009 - Online Gambling Outlawed By Cambodian Government

Many online gambling companies have been left in the lurch after the sudden clampdown by the Government of Cambodia in outlawing online gambling. This follows a directive from Prime Minister Hun Sen who is said to be endeavoring to "make social reform, strengthen public order and improve social morality".

All existing gambling licenses have been cancelled and the Minister of Finance for Cambodia, Ket Chhon has warned that in order to maintain the country's moral standards "we will punish, in accordance with the law, any business licensee who disrespects this declaration".

The Phnom Penh Post newspaper has reported that an Internet sportsbetting chain that has been operating since 2006 , the Sporting Live Group, as well as licensed operator Cambo Six, have been forced to close their businesses in accordance with the Government's decision despite the fact that their existing licenses were issued by the government until as far off as 2011.

Due to the sudden clampdown many companies did not have the opportunity to wrap up their businesses and are unable to make the necessary payouts to their players or answer to their foreign investors.

Nancy Chau, Manager for Cambo Six's head office states that she has forwarded a letter to the Prime Minister requesting a compromise in order to try and save the considerable investment in the company as it was detrimental to the company to immediately end an agreement that had been valid until the end of January 2011. She has thus far received no reply from the Prime Minister and is feeling completely "lost".
