Online Gambling to be banned in Poland

November 21, 2009 - Online Gambling to be banned in Poland

Poland may soon become the latest in a list of EU countries to ban Internet gambling. An anti-gambling campaign has already been organized by Polish leaders in an effort to ban online casinos. Critics claim that this campaign is in response to a scandal that hit the Polish government and is an attempt to draw attention away from the government’s corruption.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is endeavoring to make all gambling outside of casinos illegal as well as to raise taxes on the gambling industry.

Grzogorz Makowski from the Institute of Public Affairs stated that the Prime Minister has “covered the problem of corruption with the problem of gambling”.

After numerous scandals that involved members of government and the gambling industry were exposed, four high officials were forced to resign as a result of accusations that they were allowing the gambling industry to sway their decision. The investigation, known as “Operation Blackjack” uncovered wired tapped conversations involving the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for Sport leading them to resign from their positions.

There is speculation that the reason for the increase in tax on the gambling industry is because the country is struggling to fund the 2012 European Football Championships which it is set to co-host with Ukraine.

Polish online gamblers do not appear to be too perturbed by the proposed ban as there have been many failed attempts to ban online gambling in their country in the past.
