Report Released On Understanding Gambling Behavior

March 23, 2009 - Report Released On Understanding Gambling Behavior

A study, using data from the 2007 British Gambling Prevalence Survey, resulted in a report being released this week by the UK Gambling Commission.

The survey, by Professor Jim Orford of the University of Birmingham and Professor Mark Griffiths of Nottingham Trent University, together with Natcen, was carried out on behalf of the Gambling Commission.

The result of the survey, which investigated three key areas of a player's social position, namely their household occupational category, their personal income as well as the level of deprivation in the places where they reside definitely prove that social factors affect the way people gamble.

The study found that people living in less deprived areas gambled far less than people who live in the most deprived areas. The report also found that people who had gambling problems were more often than not found to be living in the most deprived locations.

People who have a low income have been found to gamble more often than those earning a higher salary.

The survey also found that the frequency of gambling also depended on occupational factors. Managers and professionals gambled far less and were at a much lower risk of suffering from gambling problems compared to people employed as technicians or who held semi-routine and routine jobs.

Although previous studies by academics and professionals have found that gambling appears to be a matter of individual behavior and gambling problems seen as a medical and psychological problem, the latest survey have paved the way to examine gambling and problem gambling as a psychosocial phenomena, influenced by familial and community factors in future studies.
