UK Gambling Commission Announces New Strategy Board

Febuary 21, 2009 - UK Gambling Commission Announces New Strategy Board

The UK Gambling Commission is in the process of starting up a new independent Strategy Board that will work in conjunction with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Strategy Board will be responsible for research, education and treatment programs to aid a national responsible gambling strategy.

Members for the new Strategy Board have been announced already and include the best from many different fields including socially responsible gambling services, preventative education, public health, addiction and counseling services and epidemiological research and social research program management. The Strategy Board will be led by Baroness Neuberger and will consist of Neil Goulden, Paul Bellringer, Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, Dr. Sian Griffith, David Guy, Richard Ives, Alan Jamieson, David Miers and Dr.Gerda Reith. Baroness Neuberger has invited Professor Peter Collins from the University of Salford to offer advice to the board in its first year. Professor Peter Collins comes from the Centre for the Study of Gambling.

The National Centre for Social Research, or better known as NatCen, has been appointed the responsibility to carry out the British Gambling Prevalence Survey (BGPS) 2010. This survey will be considering two previous prevalence surveys from 2000 and 2007. The survey aims to find the effectiveness of the Gambling Act of 2005, by comparing the two previous surveys. As well as this comparison, they hope to measure the prevalence of participating in commercial and private gambling establishments and estimate the prevalence of problem gambling. This study will provide plenty of useful information for the Commission and its stakeholders. The UK Gambling Commissions findings are slated to release before 2010.

Jenny Williams, Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission. had this. "We're very pleased to have NatCen on board for this project. Their experience in researching sensitive issues and complex stakeholder management is extensive."
