Unified Approach to Problem Gambling Adopted by NSW

April 7, 2009 - Unified Approach to Problem Gambling Adopted by NSW

A $2.4 million three-year strategy will be launched by the Australian state of New South Wales in order to curb the development of serious gambling problems which is wreaking havoc with people as well as their families.

There are presently many problem gambling counseling services in the state available to the public. However, in terms of the new strategy all these services will come under a new name and logo, Gambling Help.

The strategy was outlined this week by Gaming Minister Kevin Greene to over one hundred counselors who attended the NSW Problem Gambling Counselors Conference which was held in Sydney. He stated that he was hopeful that with this new scheme serious problems could be prevented by identifying early signs so that people could seek help before it got out of hand.

Greene promised that the Rees Government is investing $2.4 million in an attempt to tackle the problem before it gets worse. The Rees Government is presently funding forty three problem gambling counseling services in over two hundred different places across NSW. The G-Line phone service as well as other support materials online are also supported by them.

All these different services have different names and it is therefore their aim to get them all under one single name and logo, namely Gambling Help in order to simplify finding them when they are needed most.

John Brett from Mission Australia said "Mission Australia shares the community's concerns about the prevalence of gambling in our society and the impact it is having on individuals and families. We need to assist problem gamblers and the latest government initiative is a step in this direction"

Greene further promised that they would go all out in order to help prevent problem gambling and would be helping medical, legal, correctional, welfare and charity workers to identify symptoms and help those in their care.

Specific communication strategies will help to break down cultural barriers across NSW and an attempt will be made to reach out to people across the community in order to overcome the stigma surrounding problem gambling and encourage people to get help when they need it.
